Appraisal of the conversion possibilities of pastoral meat sheep systems to the organic production model

Abstract In the Mediterranean Basin, sheep meat production systems are based on grazing, and help to conserve biodiversity, mitigate greenhouse gases emissions maintain population in rural areas. However, lack of differentiation pastoral systems, as opposed intensive model, puts its continuity at risk. this sense, organic farming can be an alternative sustain extensive sheep-cereal marginal drylands. The aim research was evaluate conversion possibilities model working with autochthonous Segureña breed sheep. 46 farms were studied, classified into four clusters by mean multivariate analysis. order determine degree which approached 60 variables, grouped nine indicators analyzed obtain Organic Conversion Index (OCI). Nutritional management indicator has a high value approaching well Animal welfare Food safety. Marketing business , Breeds reproduction Weed pest control Sustainable pasture also reach good approximation level. Only presented values significant differences between clusters. average OCI for ranges from 63 70%, therefore it concluded that herds region close model. Among recommendations made improve are: (i) increase own fodder or find way easily economically; (ii) complete plant−soil−animal cycle, (iii) seek greater marketing autonomy (iv) achieve closer contact final consumer.
